WARNING: The Impact of Direct Sunlight on LVT Flooring: Understanding the Effects and Solutions

Luxury Vinyl Tile/Plank (LVT/P) flooring has gained immense popularity in recent years due to its durability, affordability, and wide range of designs. While LVT is known for its resilience, it’s important to consider the impact of direct sunlight on this type of flooring. With time, we’ve seen situations in which floors are being damaged by sunlight. Homeowners that have extra material (extra boxes from installation) may be able to have the floor repaired. However, homeowners without extra material may be left needing to replace the floor. In this article, we will explore the effects of direct sunlight on LVT flooring and discuss potential solutions to minimize or prevent any adverse consequences.

Understanding LVT Flooring:

Luxury Vinyl Tile is a synthetic flooring material that replicates the look and texture of natural materials such as wood, stone, or tile. It typically consists of multiple layers, including a wear layer, a printed design layer, and a backing layer. These layers are fused together to create a durable and resilient flooring solution suitable for various residential and commercial applications.

The Effects of Direct Sunlight:

  1. Fading and Discoloration: LVT flooring, like many other materials, is susceptible to fading and discoloration when exposed to direct sunlight over an extended period. The ultraviolet (UV) rays in sunlight can cause the colors and patterns on the flooring to fade, resulting in a less vibrant and uniform appearance.
  2. Heat Expansion: Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can lead to heat absorption by the LVT flooring. As the temperature rises, the flooring material may expand, potentially causing gaps or buckling in the seams. This expansion can be more pronounced in areas with intense sunlight or where the flooring is directly exposed to windows or glass doors.

Solutions and Preventive Measures:

  1. Window Treatments: Installing window treatments such as blinds, curtains, or UV-filtering window films can significantly reduce the amount of direct sunlight reaching the LVT flooring. These options can help limit the exposure to UV rays and minimize fading and discoloration. (We know we’re biased here. However, whether you allow us to help you window treatments or find another solution… it’s important that you have the protection you need)
  2. Area Rugs and Furniture Placement: Placing area rugs or furniture strategically can provide additional protection to areas of the LVT flooring that receive direct sunlight. These coverings act as barriers, reducing the direct impact of sunlight and preventing uneven fading.
  3. Extra Material: Having extra material in storage in case a repair is necessary can be critical. Specific styles/colors are discontinued by manufacturers regularly. Therefore, you can’t count on the same product being available years down the road should a repair be needed. If you don’t have extra material on hand, go back and order an extra box or two… tuck it away in your basement or storage area
  4. Consult with Flooring Professionals: If you are concerned about direct sunlight and its potential impact on your LVT flooring, it is advisable to consult with flooring professionals or manufacturers. They can provide guidance specific to your flooring type, recommend appropriate preventive measures, and suggest suitable products for maintenance.

While LVT flooring is a durable and versatile option for many spaces, direct sunlight can have a noticeable impact on its appearance and performance over time. By implementing preventive measures like window treatments, area rugs, and proper maintenance, you can minimize the effects of direct sunlight on LVT flooring and extend its lifespan. Consulting with flooring professionals can offer valuable insights and ensure the long-term beauty and functionality of your LVT flooring investment.
