Choosing the Right Area Rug for Your Space
Last week we talked about the best place to buy area rugs for your home…but now that you know where to buy the best quality and most affordable rugs, we need to discuss how to choose the best area rug for your space. Even The Dude, from The Big Lebowski, knew the importance of a rug, and how it really pulled the room together! Interior designers are in agreement over these tried and true tips and practices for selecting a rug…and let’s face it, we have over 30,000 area rugs for you to choose from…you’re gonna need some help! So, let’s discuss the key elements to consider when choosing a rug!
First Things First, Size Matters!
Let’s be honest…does size matter?!? When choosing an area rug, the answer is a resounding YES!!! A rug that is too small will immediately make a room feel small. Choosing the right size will pull the room together by defining a specific zone that incorporates the main pieces of furniture. Let’s look at main rooms of a home:
In your Living Room and even Family Room, you want to clearly define an inviting sitting area. Your area rug should have ample space around the coffee table that includes all of the furniture for that seating area. This picture shows various area rug sizes that would be a great choice for your living room. While a 5 x 8 rug can work in this space, especially if you’re working within a budget, an 8 x 10 or 9 x 12 rug really creates a spacious feeling in the room.
A large rug is best in the dining room. Your dining table and all chairs should have plenty of room to fit within the area rug. Of course, this depends on the size of your table. This picture shows that an 8 x 10 rug will work for most dining spaces, but a good tip is to add at least 4’ to the length and width of your table measurements to be sure. Your rug should extend past dining chairs in the pulled out position.
Rug buying for your bedroom can be tricky because the bed takes up so much of the rug space. There are a few options that work well in bedrooms. One option is a large rug that allows for about 36″ of space on either side of the bed. If budget doesn’t allow for a rug of that size, you can place a rug on either side of the bed, or angle your bed creatively to maximize rug space, as shown below.
Color, Pattern and Material
Next on our list is style. A few simple tips can help narrow down the large selection of rug colors, and patterned rugs in our selection. Take a look at the overall decor of your space. If the walls and furniture are neutral, you may want to go with bold patterns and colors. If you have color on the walls or furniture, especially bold colors, you may want to choose a neutral rug with accents of that color in it. Balancing these elements can have a grounding effect in the room. Mixing too many bold elements can feel chaotic, while too many neutrals may feel boring or cold.
Area rugs come in many materials. Our online shop has fifteen materials to search within and thankfully, a thorough explanation of each material. For added comfort in a room, a shag rug screams lay on me, walk on me…come get cozy. Natural fiber and hand knotted rugs are an obvious choice for consumers who prefer products made from sustainable sources. PET rugs are made from recycled plastic bottles. The possibilities are really endless. Our simple search makes it easy to narrow down your choices. Stick with the styles your’re most drawn to, and have fun pulling the room together!
